How and Why Did We Start? PDF Print E-mail

The Classical Riding Club was borne out of celebration and desperation!  People wanted to know about Classical Dressage.

I had tackled this subject through my dressage books, articles...  and the dressage DVDs and videos, many of which dealt with dressage movements.

It was as though a floodgate had opened, hundreds - nay - thousands of letters poured in. It seemed I had touched a nerve. People were concerned to know more about a way of riding which seemed to be disappearing from within our midst. Clearly something had to be done.

Sylvia teaching Claire Lilley Why did people write? They were worried! They saw many of the riding traditions they had been brought up with – respect for the horse’s mouth – light hands – a quiet seat – taking time – schooling for joy and self-improvement not just to compete – taking time with young horses - disappearing before their eyes. They also saw that the people who taught that way were dying out.

The fact people cared so much empowered me. In 1995 with the help of a few kind friends, I formed the Classical Riding Club. I saw it as a way of putting something back. As a way of linking the best from the past, to the future….through -  CRC Trainer - Jenny Franklin at Myerscough - Photo by Lesley Skipper

In short, I started the Club to encourage a Resurgence in Classical Riding – to resurrect those precious ideals which had motivated all those fantastic people to write in…
